Saddle Stitching

What is Saddle Stitching?

Saddle stitching is a common cost-effective, and popular method of binding that is quick and easy. Your text sections are ordered in line, starting with the centre section, with each subsequent section dropped on top in a tent shape on a conveyor. A cover can also be added in line, but unlike the other methods that we will explain, we do not need a separate cover for saddle stitching to work. Once all the pages have been combined, each unbound product has a line of wire passed through the spine, cutting off to look like staples. This is where the process gets its name, as it’s like we stitch the pages together. Each product then passes through the trimmer, where it is cut to its finished size and ready for distribution.

What is it suitable for?

As mentioned, saddle stitching is a great, cost-effective method that is well suited to large and short runs but not for large numbers of pages. Stitched jobs can have the option of having a separate cover or not, which is called a self-cover. A self-cover is a common way to reduce print and mailing costs and is popular with direct mail and high-volume jobs. Another benefit to stitching is that special items can be bound in the centre to be pulled out, such as posters, which won’t harm the integrity of the product.

The other in house binding methods we use at Warners Midlands are Perfect binding and PUR Binding allowing us to match the best method to each printed product.
